MAJ Smith enlisted in the US Army in 1991. He served as an enlisted man/ NCO for 12 years achieving the rank of SFC as 31M (Multi-Channel Radio Operator) and 14J (Air Defense Command and Control Operator). MAJ Smith was commissioned through Army OCS in April 2003 at FT Benning, GA. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from Excelsior College, and a Masters in Leadership from the University of Texas at El Paso. His Military Education includes: Airborne, Air Assault, Marine Corp Warfighting Skills Course, Basic and Advanced Military Transition Team Course, School of Cadet Command Instructor training Course, Joint Special Operations Task Force Course, Simulations S7 Course, Air Defense Artillery Basic and Captains Career Courses, and Command and General Staff College.
MAJ Smith arrived to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on 01 June 2016. Prior to this assignment he served as the US Army Central Deputy Chief of Air and Missile Defense at Shaw AFB and Kuwait; Iraqi Security Forces Development Officer with CJTF-OIR, Baghdad, Iraq; the Brigade Executive Officer for the 165 th Infantry Brigade at FT Jackson, SC; Battalion Executive Officer for 1-61 Infantry Regiment at FT Jackson, SC; Security Transition Team Chief with 3 rd BCT 101 st Airborne DIV (AA) at FT Campbell and FOB Salerno Afghanistan; Assistant Professor of Military Science at South Carolina State University, SC; Field Artillery Advisor to 5 th Brigade 20 th Iraqi Army Division at FOB Normandy, Iraq; Company Commander Foxtrot Company 1-13 th Infantry Regiment at FT Jackson, SC; Platoon Leader and Executive Officer for Echo 5-7 ADA at Babenhausen, Germany; Assistant S3 and Battle Captain for 1-4 ADA at Wackernheim, Germany and Baghdad, Iraq; and twelve years enlisted achieving the rank of SFC.
