SFC Matthew C Bertles enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 2002. He attended Infantry One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Benning, GA. Upon completion, he was assigned to Bco 1-9 Cav at Fort Hood, TX. He progressed through the enlisted ranks from Private to Sergeant serving as a Rifleman, Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) gunner, M240B Machine Gunner, Team Leader, and Squad Leader. While at Fort Hood, he completed combat deployments to Iraq. He was then assigned to Aco 1-4 IN in Hohenfels, Germany where he served as a Squad Leader and completed a combat deployment to Afghanistan. SFC Bertles’ next assignment was to Dco 3-10 IN at Fort Leonardwood, MO where he served as an Operations NCO, a Drill Sergeant and Senior Drill Sergeant. He was then assigned to Bco 1-26 IN at Fort Knox, KY where he served as a Platoon Sergeant, completing a combat deployment to Afghanistan before the unit was deactivated. His most recent assignment was at Fort Stewart, GA with Aco 1-64 AR, where he served as a Platoon Sergeant and First Sergeant. While there he participated in a deployment to Bulgaria and the Republic of Georgia in support of Regionally Allocated Forces (RAF) III, which built international relations between several NATO partners.
SFC Bertles’ military education includes the Primary Leadership Development Course, Advanced Leader Course, Senior Leader Course, United States Army Drill Sergeant School, Total Army Instructor Course, Combat Life Saver Course, Combatives level 1, Equal Opportunity Leader Course, Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention Course, Close Quarter Battle Urban Course, and the Bradley Crew Evaluator Course.
SFC Bertles’ awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (2 bronze oak leaf cluster), Purple Heart Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Valor, Army Commendation Medal (1 silver oak leaf cluster), Army Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Valorous Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (2 combat stars), Iraq Campaign Medal (2 combat stars), Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (3rd Award), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd Award), NATO Medal (2nd Award), Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Drill Sergeant Badge.
SFC Bertles has been married to Sarah since October 2004 and they have three sons, Cohen, Connor, and Thatcher.
