MSG Townsend enlisted in the United States Army in February of 2001. He attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, OK.  After graduating Basic Combat Training, he was assigned to A 1-56, Fort Bliss, TX for Advance Individual Training (AIT).  Upon completion of AIT, MSG Townsend was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Air Defense Artillery Regiment at Fort Bliss, TX.  During his time in 2nd of the 1st he progressed through the enlisted ranks from Private First Class to Staff Sergeant serving as a Crew chief, Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant, while completing one combat tour in support of OIF I and a rapid response mission to the Republic of Korea.  Following his assignment with 2-1, MSG Townsend was selected to serve as an operator of C2BMC and the AN/TPY-2 radar.  

MSG Townsend was then assigned to 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, Fort Shafter, HI where he served as a crew chief for the AN/TPY-2 radar.  During his time in the Pacific, MSG Townsend served in the emergency action cell for USPACOM.  Upon completion of his tour, MSG Townsend was assigned to 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade where he served as the S3 NCOIC and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  MSG Townsend was then assigned to 3-4 ADAR where he served as a First Sergeant for Headquarters and Headquarters Battery and Delta Battery.  MSG Townsend deployed his battery to Jordan to provide Air and Missile Defense in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. 

MSG Townsend’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (3 bronze oak leaf cluster), the Army Commendation Medal (5th bronze oak leaf cluster), the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Army Achievement Medal (5th bronze oak leaf cluster), the Presidential Unit Citation Award, the Army Good Conduct Medal (5th award), National Defense Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal (1 combat stars), the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd award), and the Army Space Badge.

MSG Townsend’s military schools include Army Space Cadre Course, S.E.R.E. Level C Course, Air Defense Command and Control Officers Course, Missile Defense Operators Course, Multi-TADIL Joint Information Course, Senior Leaders Course (Commandants List), Advanced Leaders Course, AN/TPY-2 Qualification Course, Basic Leaders Course (Commandants List), Combatives level 1 and 2, Total Army Instructor Course, Battle Staff Course, Combat Lifesaver Course, Supervisor Development Course, Management Development Course, Action Officer Development Course, and Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Course.

MSG Townsend has been happily married to Dr. Rebecca Townsend since 2016.
